John Gibson spent a number of years as a solicitor and the financial director of a limited company.

Since coming to the Bar in 1993 he has been instructed in all aspects of criminal law and is regularly instructed in:

White collar crime
Sexual abuse and historic abuse cases
Serious drugs offences and crimes of violence
Offences concerning large scale theft and robbery

Crime

The breadth of his experience is indicated by the following examples:
He was instructed in the prosecution of directors following the collapse of Alan Paul Hairdressing.
He was instructed in the Morecombe Bay case concerning the death of Chinese cockle pickers.
He has been instructed to defend in a large number of homicide cases.
He is frequently instructed to prosecute complex cases on behalf of Royal Mail.

He has been leading counsel instructed for defendants facing a number of allegations including:
Conspiracy to defraud the Department of Education
Conspiracy to corrupt the employees of Merseyside Police Authority
Conspiracy to import class A drugs
Allegations of historic abuse at a school for children with behavioural difficulties.

He has defended in a number of unusual cases including:
The prosecution of a man for aiding and abetting the suicide of a friend
Section18 GBH alleging abuse resulting in Post Traumatic Stress

He represented Michael Horncastle in the Crown Court, Court of Appeal and in one of the last cases to be heard in the House of Lords. Indeed the judgement was handed down in the newly opened Supreme Court. The case concerned the hearsay provisions of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 and a right to a fair trial under Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights. ( R v Horncastle and others [2009] UKSC 14 )
