Jonathan read law at the University of Manchester where he was awarded the R.G. Lawson prize for his dissertation on ‘The Developing Approach of the Law to the Resolution of Intractable Contact Disputes’. He undertook the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law before completing a common law pupillage at St John’s Buildings Sheffield.
Jonathan has a particular interest in family law and cases that involve mental health and ethico-legal issues. He is currently acting in a case involving international surrogacy arrangements.
Jonathan is available to provide training in all aspects of children law. He regularly provides training for child care professionals on a wide-range of topics from how to give evidence at court, to issues of disclosure in family proceedings.
Notable Cases
Inquest into the death of Peter Thompson (Manchester Coroner’s Court, 2011) – represented a night manager (mental health nurse) in a high profile inquest into the death of a voluntary patient. The court heard expert evidence that there had been a gross failure to provide basic nursing care to the deceased. The jury returned a verdict of misadventure contributed to by neglect.
Inquest into the death of Abbie Jones (Sheffield Coroner’s Court, 2010) – represented a GP receptionist in an inquest into the death of a four month old child. HM Coroner Mr Dorries giving a narrative verdict found that Abbie Jones died in direct consequence of an overdose of prescribed Frusemide medication that had been wrongly generated by the GP receptionist as a result of established procedures not being followed.
Inquest into the death of Moyra Stockill (Middlesbrough Coroner’s Court, 2009) – represented a staff nurse during a six week inquest into the death in custody of a 61 year old female who had been detained in hospital for treatment under section 3 of the Mental Health Act 1983. Jury returned a verdict of misadventure contributed to by neglect, having found that both NHS Staff and the Police made a number of errors.

Jonathan has an interest in cases which require the consideration of the impact of the State’s actions on a person’s right to a private/family life. He has represented interested persons in a number of high profile and long running inquests concerning deaths contributed to by the actions of health care professionals (see above).
Jonathan undertakes work in relation to all areas of child law. He has acted in a wide range of proceedings including section 8 applications, care proceedings and wardship. Jonathan has experience of cross-examining vulnerable witnesses, including children, as part of these proceedings.
Jonathan has represented parties in the Family Proceedings Court, County Court and High Court.
Jonathan is a member of both the Family Law Bar Association and Association of Lawyers for Children.
